Palestinian Hebrew

This is a morphologically tagged database of Palestinian-vocalised manuscripts from the Cairo Genizah. In addition to the dropdown menus of grammatical tags, you can also use the global search box to type in Leipzig glosses (e.g., VERB, NOUN, SUFF) with the % symbol serving as a wildcard between entries (e.g., CONJ%VERB will match CONJ=3MS-VERB.yiqtol). You can also click on any form to see manuscript details, further bibliography, and a link to manuscript images on the Cambridge University Library website. This database is an open-access tool meant for non-commercial educational/research use only.

Bibliography

The material from the database is based on a selection of (primarily) biblical manuscripts with Palestinian vocalisation from the Cairo Genizah. In most cases, the readings are based on consultation of digital images of the manuscripts (perhaps in conjunction with a print edition where available, even if this means correcting readings of the print edition). In rare cases, particularly when access to images of the manuscript is limited, the data may reflect complete reliance on a print edition. Because the present database is concerned with Palestinian vocalisation for phonological/morphological purposes, those manuscripts that exhibit a significant proportion of Palestinian vowel signs are prioritised. In this vein, the brief description of a manuscript in the ‘Manuscript Details’ pop-up box may indicate ‘EXEMPLARY’ or ‘GOOD’. These monikers are simply meant to indicate the value that a particular manuscript has for providing evidence for Palestinian-vocalised words relevant for phonology/morphology. Moreover, we should also mention that for similar reasons—and due to the limitations of digital fonts—cantillation and Tiberian vocalisation (to the degree that they also occur in these texts) are not notated in this electronic database. Users should check each manuscript image to see the particular scribal conventions utilised and any cantillation signs or Tiberian pointing that may accompany the Palestinian vowel signs. The tagging of the biblical text is based on an open source tagging database of Tiberian Biblical Hebrew modified for the relevant Palestinian texts. Images used in the ‘Manuscript Details’ are credit to the original source, whether Cambridge University Library, Ktiv, etc. References cited in the ‘Manuscript Details’—along with other relevant resources—are included below:
